10 reasons why you need to use a primer for your skin

Primers are very important to use on days where you want your makeup to look flawless all day. I am about to mention 10 reasons why primers are so great for your skin!

#1  You can control the amount of oil production on your face by using a primer. Some people have oily skin, and some people have dry skin. No matter what skin type you have, primers can help control your face’s oil production.

#2  Primers are good for all skin types! If you have oily skin, dry skin, or normal skin, it doesn’t really matter. Primers are good for everyone!

#3  You might think that primers are a hassle and you don’t need them. But a primer makes your face look better by filling in the pores to make your skin look flawless!

#4  Primers can help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles because they have ingredients that help shrink the size of your pores. Some primers also have sunscreen, which is great!

#5  At the end of the day, your makeup kit is probably really messy. But if you use a primer, your kit will stay mostly clean because primers create a barrier on your skin that keeps most of your makeup on your face instead of all over your kit.

#6  Primers are good for your skin! They can even be better than your regular moisturizing cream because they have anti-aging ingredients that keep you looking younger.

#7  You’re probably wondering how a primer helps protect your skin from the sun, right? It’s simple: most primers have ingredients that help protect against UV rays. That means that if you want to protect your skin, you should use a primer!

#8  Your face’s makeup will look so much better if you put a primer on because it fills in the pores and makes them less noticeable. So if you want your foundation and concealer to look as flawless as possible, then primers are the way to go.

#9  Some primers help control oil production and can “melt” into your skin. Once it melts into your skin, the primer will still keep your makeup looking great! And if you have oily skin, a primer with these kinds of features is perfect for you.

#10  Primers usually have ingredients that protect against the sun, make your skin look flawless, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. So in conclusion, primers are really great for your skin!

Buying Guide

Buying a primer can be quite confusing, especially if you’re just starting to get into makeup. If you’re not sure where to start and want some solid advice on which primers would go best with which products then this guide is for you! I’ll start off by talking about the different types of primers and then move on to application tips and tricks.

You may have heard of the usual primers everyone thinks about when talking about makeup primers which are silicone-based primers, but there are more to choose from! There are also oil-based and water-based primers. Silicone-based primers are good for smoothing out the skin and making it look silky smooth so your foundation sticks to it better and it will last longer. If you have oily skin, then I would steer towards silicone-based primers as they help control oils throughout the day.

Oil-based primers are good for people who struggle with dry patches or flaky skin as they can be quite moisturising. They also help keep your makeup in place for longer. Another thing oil-based primers do well is control sebum (your skins natural oils) throughout the day which is why I would recommend these to people who have an oily T zone and dry patches elsewhere on their face. Water-based primers are usually very hydrating and help give a dewy look, they also reduce the appearance of pores (great for people who have big pores like me!) and give a matte finish.

What is your skin type?

Primers will usually be different depending on what kind of primer you’re after, so it’s important to know your skin type before buying one just because it’s an amazing product. If you’re not sure what your skin type is, here are the basics when it comes to skin types:

Oily/ Acne Prone Skin- If you have oily or acne-prone skin then you should look for oil-free mattifying primers. My favourite primer for this is the Lakme Absolute Blur Perfect, Makeup Primer. This primer will help reduce shine throughout the day and keep your makeup looking fresh all day. Another good primer for oily skin types is the Blue Heaven Flawless Makeup Base Primer. I love using this under my foundation as it helps reduce shine during the day! It can also be used alone to give a matte finish, but if you have dry patches then that won’t work very well.

Combination Skin- If you have combination skin and struggle with dry patches and oily skin then water-based primers would be perfect for you. They usually help hydrate the skin which is what your dry patches need and they also mattify your skin so it looks flawless! The Angelie Most Beautiful Trending Fixer combo with Primer Foundation Luxury Primer is a good primer for combination type skin. It helps control oil throughout the day.

Dry Skin- If you have dry skin then silicone-based primers are what you should be looking at. They tend to have a more moisturising formula so they will suit your skin better than other primers that contain oil or water. You can use the Lakme Absolute Under Cover Gel Face Primer. This primer will not only give you a matte finish, but it hydrates the skin too.

Normal Skin- For people with normal skin types I wouldn’t recommend using just one type of primer all over your face because it could cause either oiliness or dryness depending on what kind of primer you use. A better thing to do would be to mix and match primers! One of my favourite combinations is the L’Oreal Paris Base Magique Primer. The smoothing/ blurring primer will hydrate your skin which is what you need if you have dry patches, but also give your skin a nice matte finish. Mixing it with the Rimmel Stay Matte primer will help balance out the dry patches and leave you with flawless looking skin!

The primers I have used are just my personal favourites, there’s no need to buy all of them unless you want to. I would recommend getting one that is suited to your skin type, but if you can’t afford two primers right now then don’t worry about it! Just find one that’s good for most of your problem areas (for example one that has a matte finish and is good for oilier skin types like the L’oreal Studio Secrets Primer) and buy that.
